The suburbs are an especially conflicted place, with regard to open space, plants and animals. The suburbs could be a home for a lot more wildlife, if only those who live in and control them were more mindful. First, one has to know of what is at issue with regard to leveling the playing field -- living field -- which are our suburbs. The first step is shaking the originally British aesthetic which is the Green, the Commons. A real village green would be wonderful. A commons, one commons, for a neighborhood to share. Rather, beginning with Levittown NY and Columbia MD soon afterward (surely I am missing others), the culture emerged for each family to have his or her own. 'Own lawn, own energy for lawn mower, and Roundup or some thing else for "maintenance", multiplied my many millions.
And here we are. Hence we have people spending lots of time and money on chemicals to produce green lawns, and not too much more. This is beneficial to no wildlife, only to the homo sapiens who regard this as the "right way" to keep their lot.

...more to come
